Tips

1. BB Tip: How to Autodial Your Bridge # + Extension + Admin Code

Automate hosting your conference call from anywhere (BB calendar, email, and contacts) with this format.

Tel:8666578888,,2188888#,,*,,8888#,,1

Note: If you want to enter it into your contacts, use the “Notes” section of your contact.  Also, use comma’s not periods

2. No Simultaneous Talk & Tether on VZ

On the AT&T 3G Bold (and newer), EDGE allow you to take a phone call while using your BlackBerry as a cellular modem for your laptop, but not with Verizon.  CDMA has a single threaded radio operation.  Hence voice and data cannot share the radio.

BlackBerry

3. 9550 Storm2 Gets Good Reviews

Improvements for include the addition of Wi-Fi, doubling of Flash memory from 128 MB to 256 MB, and doubling of device memory from 1 GB to 2 GB.  Seems everyone is impressed with the SurePress screen too. Mobile Enterprise Magazine

4. 9700 Bold2 Looking Good Too

Biggest problem with Bold?  The trackball gets dirt in it.  Some might also say the Bold is too bulky.  Bold2 fixes both issues.  Bold 2 is smaller (4.29″ x 2.36″ x 0.56″), and uses a digital trackpad.  Then with double the flash memory (256mb), this 3G Bold 2 should have a comparatively long usability life span (2-3yrs?).

5. RIM & Others to Support JIL Widgets

The Joint Innovation Lab (JIL) today announced the support of Research in Motion, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics and Sharp Corporation for the JIL widget specification in the manufacturers’ future mobile handsets, starting in 2010.  JIL is a joint venture of China Mobile, SOFTBANK, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone, aimed at creating a single global platform for mobile application developers that’s supported by a wide variety of devices and carriers.

6. Oracle Mobile Sales Assistant 2.0 for BlackBerry

The new application adds support for 12 languages, along with a range of new functionality. Mobile Enterprise Magazine

7. PhoneSnoop on BlackBerry

The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team warned BlackBerry users on Tuesday about a new program called PhoneSnoop that allows someone to remotely eavesdrop on phone conversations.CNET

iPhone

8. Analyst Predicts Verizon iPhone in 2010

The only way the “Verizon iPhone in 2010″ rumor will go away is if by December 31, 2010 we still haven’t seen a Verizon iPhone. Otherwise, the rumor will stick around and offer continuous debate until we are completely sick of it. UnWired

9. AT&T Implies iPhone Exclusivity Ending

AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega strongly implied today that the carrier’s exclusive deal to sell the iPhone in the U.S. is ending, although he gave no details in a conference call with analysts. InfoWorld

10. Market Share: BlackBerry 40%, iPhone 30%

The iPhone is on track to become the most popular smartphone in the U.S. market, according to a new survey by ChangeWave Research. iPhone market share now stands at 30 percent, versus 40 percent for the current reigning champion, BlackBerry. InfoWorld

11. Sprint: Windows Mobile 6.5 Early 2010

Sprint Exec David Owens admitted that Windows Mobile 6.5 is currently being tested on the company’s devices and will be ready sometime early next year.

13. Motorola\Verizon Droid Release Nov 6th

Motorola and Verizon Wireless announced Wednesday that the much-anticipated Droid handset would hit the market Nov. 6. The $199 handset operates on Google’s Android 2.0 software and is poised to battle the iPhone for market share. The Droid will be heavily promoted by Verizon, its exclusive vendor. “The marketing campaign that will support the Droid will be the largest in our history,” Verizon Chief Marketing Officer John Stratton said. 14. Free! Super-Rich GPS Navigation from Google

Garmin and Tom Tom stocks plummeted after Google announced this week that it has created a free wireless navigation service that will offer turn-by-turn directions, live traffic updates, and the ability to recognize voice commands. The company says its service will initially be available only on the Motorola Droid.New York Times /InternetNews / Unwired (video) / PCMag (review)

15. Gartner: Smartphones Outpace Laptops by 2012

By 2012, revenue derived from the sale of smartphones will hit $191 million and will outpace revenue from mobile PCs such as laptops, according to a Gartner study. That development, the research firm predicts, will lead all major vendors of personal computers to announce plans, by the end of this year, to jump into the smartphone fray.

Android 2.0 to get turn-by-turn navigation in Google maps!

Now we all use and love Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Maps, but turn by turn navigation has always been missing. With the Motorola Droid announcement today there was a mention of a new application: Google Maps Navigation, and as the name implies, it finally adds navigation capabilities to Google Maps. It only works on Android 2.0 devices, and so far there is only one: Droid. And It only works in the USA, so Europeans and Asians are out of luck. Those small issues aside, you do get some nifty new features. The new voice API is used to enable hands free searching, and if you have a handset that supports a dock then you get “dock mode” so you can keep both hands on the wheel. Check out the videos below to get an idea of what Navigation is all about:

There’ll be more as it comes!

¿Google Audio?

The Motorola Droid

I am not going to lie. I have not been been down with a Moto product since my beloved Timeport that I dropped in the toilet! (Don’t ask) But from what I heard, the Verizon Droid is the phone to get.

We have been hearing about an iPhone killer since the iPhone first dropped. And needless to say, the iPhone is still alive and kicking. But can the Droid create the much hyped homicide? For starters, it is part of a more superior network, it has a keyboard, a 5 mega-pixel camera, it can multitask, it has speech recognition, it has, it has, it has……. the list seems top be endless.

The phone is dropping next week at a Verizon store near you.

Open Sourced Phones

Don’t get me wrong, I am all about “open source” development and communities, but does anyone else see a problem for the new Android phones?  If they are as advertised “open source apps” one would assume there’s no Google Submission Board (which is fictitious) to “approve” apps.  So, theoretically anyone could make an app that steals information from the owners phone and account.  What’s to stop that?  I grasp that it’s illegal, however if that’s the reasoning behind your arguement then you’re a moron.

Maybe I am ignorant to the method of “app submission”, but if there is a middle-man between developer and consumer then are they actually open source apps?  And what carrier is going to allow these phones on their network?  Not only is this a violation of most, if not all, terms of service agreements but potentially incredible legal charges.  Please someone tell me I am missing something, because I’d like to possible get an Android device.

HTC Dragon? The new android device from HTC? Spotted?

The HTC Dragon is seemingly the Android variant of the highly popular Windows Mobile HTC HD2 running a 1 GHzSnapdragon processor–also found on the HD2 and the Acer neoTouch S200.

The Dragon seems to have a capacitive touch display with a row of touch-sensitive hardware buttons and a trackball at the bottom. Although SlashGear is postulating that the device may be a GSM device sporting GSM/EDGE/HSPA radios, that may not be the actual case upon release; recent HTC devices made for Verizon Wireless also state “3G” when on the carrier’s high-speed EVDO network. Those devices include the Verizon Wireless Touch Pro2 and theHTC Imagio.

The Dragon shares another similar trait with the Windows Mobile HTC HD2 including a large 4.3-inch touchscreen display, which we’re guessing is capacitive in nature as Android does support capacitive touchscreens. Additionally, it looks like the camera may also support an LED flash. Is this actually a chin-less HTC Hero with a larger screen?

Please comment! Also will update as it comes!

"Android Adoption Is About To Explode"

It appears that Google’s mobile strategy is starting to pay off.  In a third quarter conference call, Eric Schmidt, CEO stated that “Android adoption is about to explode.”

There are now 12 Android phones across 32 carriers in 26 countries.

According to an a recent article on TechCrunch by Erick Schonfeld the whole Android strategy is to offer an low-cost, fully-featured, open-source OS and hand that to the cell phone manufacturers so that they can concentrate more on designing desirable hardware.  This strategy will allow Google to get an increasing amount of it’s revenue from mobile searches.    This trend is anticipated to be one of Google’s  biggest sources of growth in the coming years.

The full article by Erick Schonfeld may be found here:  http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/15/schmidt-android-adoption-is-about-to-explode/

Bar Control

ist eine Anwendung, mit der man oft benötigte Apps in die Notification-Liste legen kann, um so jederzeit schnellen Zugriff zu haben;

The Day I`ve Been Waiting For

Well boys and girls. Its happened, 1ghz phones are on the horizon. I know the snapdrogon processors have been mentioned before. But as far as I know Acer is the first one to speak of releasing one. Now its time to replace my beloved G1.

Isnt it sexy?!?!

Acer has announced their first Android smartphone, called the Liquid. The Acer Liquid runs the Snapdragon 1GHz processor, and it’s also the first Android phone that uses the Snapdragon processor.

The phone comes with a high-def WVGA capacitive touchscreen and will be powered by Android version 1.6 aka Donut. The company claims the phone has been made with a couple of software features better than other smart phones that the company ever produced.

Such as power management for better battery life, better UI for entertainment and web bookmarking, camera with geo-tagging, self-timer, ISO, accelerated auto-focus performance, Spinlets app for streaming of music and video, and integration with social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc. There is no official price tag and actual release date for this phone yet.

Gowalla vs. FourSquare: Who Will Win?

FourSquare, the location-based mobile application game that launched back in March, has been getting a lot of attention here in the U.S., but in the meantime, an offering made available in the iPhone (s appl) App Store that same month has been gaining users internationally: Gowalla. Created by the Austin, Texas-based startup AlamoFire, the app is similar to FourSquare in that you can check in and notify friends when you get to a certain location, such as a restaurant or a bar, to earn “pins,” much like the set of badges you try to earn on FourSquare. But Gowalla’s location-based information is crowdsourced, which has allowed the app to quickly gain traction in places around the world.

So while FourSquare rolled out its app in London last week and is poised to expand to Paris next, Gowalla has had a 7-month head start in those cities and countless others. CEO Josh Williams wouldn’t specify how many users Gowalla has, but said they collectively create more than 1,000 new locations a day.

Of course, FourSquare has a leg up in that it’s also available on Android-based (s goog) phones. But that advantage is set to disappear as Gowalla’s Williams tells us that the startup plans to expand to Android and BlackBerry (s rimm) devices, as well as the Palm (s palm) Pre, within the next few weeks.

AlamoFire received $2 million in funding from Founder’s Fund and Alsop Louie Partners in February 2008.

VNC Viewer

Aloqa's LBS iPhone App Just Misses the Mark

From Loopt to FourSquare, it seems like every mobile-focused startup these days wants to hop on board the location-based application train. Aloqa launched an iPhone version of its free Android and BlackBerry application last week (the startup’s CEO, Sanjeev Agrawal, spoke during a panel at our recent Mobilize conference).

Like Geodelic, Aloqa helps you find nearby points of interest — what it calls “channels” — that you can customize according to your preferences. For example, if you’d rather get a cup of coffee from Peet’s than from Starbucks or another cafe, you can subscribe to the Peet’s channel. You’re then a tap away from pulling up a map that will guide to the store location you want to visit.

After trying out Aloqa for a week, I think it’s a solid LBS app but wish that its channels included more drilled-down points of interest. We recently moved our office to the SOMA neighborhood, an area of San Francisco with which I’m still not terribly familiar. I struggled to find a place to grab a quick salad for lunch using Aloqa and wound up using my Google Maps application instead.

While Aloqa has a channel that lists nearby Yelp-reviewed restaurants, none of them offered the type of food I was looking for and none of them did takeout. (I admittedly had not looked at the fast food channel). What Aloqa did help me find was a nearby ATM for my bank and a Starbucks store closer to the one I was originally going to, which are definite pluses. There’s also a channel that notifies you when one of your Facebook friends is nearby, but only one of my friends has installed Aloqa on their phone so this hasn’t proven to be a helpful feature.

Aloqa just launched this summer, so there’s still room for improvement; hopefully we’ll soon see channels on it that point to more disaggregated points of interest. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based startup received $1.5 million in Series A funding this July from Wellington Partners and angel investors.

Infelizmente disponível apenas no exterior.

Android

Setting up Android SDK on Linux

Google provides Windows, Linux and Mac OS X releases of Android SDK. Unfortunately the Linux build is a 32-bit application and setup on modern Linux desktops requires some tweaking. The following steps are needed:

  • Download the SDK and extract to a directory of your choice.
  • Create new environment variables named ANDROID_SDK and ANDROID_SDK15. Both should point to the SDK installation directory.
  • Make sure that JAVA_HOME points to a 64-bit JDK.
  • Add $ANDROID_SDK/tools to the PATH variable.
  • Install 32-bit releases of the following libraries: libXt, libXtst, libXi and ncurses. Your package manager should allow 32-bit and 64-bit versions to co-exist on your system.
  • Create an AVD (Android Virtual Device) instance, e.g. android create avd -n my_avd -t 1

You should now be able to launch the Android emulator with the following command (my_avd is name of the newly created Android Virtual Device):

emulator -avd my_avd

Principali Notizie della Settimana

Cosa è successo recentemente in ambito di mercato digitale? (fonte HypeBot –  Wondermark NetVibes Page).

• Twitter lancia una nuova opzione (per ora solo per invito e in fase beta) chiamata “Are you on the List”.

• Warner Music Group riattiva i suoi contenuti all’interno di YouTube.

HTC Hero update

On Friday, I had another go at downloading and installing the updater. This time I downloaded it at work on the laptop as opposed to having previously downloaded on my MacBook at home and transferring it to an SD card. Easier said than done however owing to our work set-up. Basically we have two screens available, what we call the “blue” screen where we can do what we want, install apps etc but nothing is backed up and from where there is no internet access enabled and then the “grey” screen that is available when you log on via a Citrix server. PC people will know what that means, I, however don’t understand it. There is internet access enabled in the “grey’ screen but if you download anything it can’t be saved on the grey screen but instead has to be saved to the blue screen. Doing so takes ages.

Anyway, I downloaded the HTC updater via grey, all 101mb of it, and saved it to the blue screen which took an hour and 20 minutes. I then connected the Hero on the blue screen via HTC Sync, ensured it was actually connected and then fired up the updater. To my blessed relief it opened and thereafter the update was plain sailing. I have no idea why things suddenly worked. I failed previously and my tech-savy PC chum at work also failed and what is odd is that he downloaded the file himself as opposed to using the mac downloaded file I provided him with. Ah well, bottom line is who cares, at least it has now been updated.

Talking of bottom lines….I am so glad it has now been sorted as the Hero feels much more responsive when flicking through screens and quicker too. Getting things back to normal did not take long after either. My Gmail, Gcal and Google contacts were all synced back upon re-entering my password, some settings were quickly changed and the apps I had bought were re-downloaded via MarketPlace. Without really consciously having done it, I seem to be moving more stuff to the Cloud, as they say, as I also now use Remember The Milk. The advantage is being able to keep different devices in sync and not being tied to the computer for restores and stuff.

The MarketStore has a section called “My Downloads” which stores details of the apps downloaded, installed and purchased. It also remembers which ones you have paid for so there is no hassle about having to pay for them again. Like the iPhone, there are no “passwords” (another blessed relief) to have to record somewhere and keep track of. I had bought a backup application and had done a backup prior to updating the ROM but getting everything back to normal was so stress free I didn’t bother. Unlike the iPhone, you can restore from the device on the move which is a nice feeling.

I must admit that after the first few days with this HTC Hero I was unsure about it but since then I have warmed to it. There are things that it does better than the iPhone and vice-versa but more about that later this week.

sudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/11-android.rules

y ponemos lo siguiente:

SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bb4", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0c01", MODE="0666", OWNER="thearcher" SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bb4", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0c02", MODE="0666", OWNER="thearcher"

recovery-rav1.2.1g.img a recovery-new.img

./fastboot boot recovery-new.img

./adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-new.img ./adb shell

http://www.golem.de/0909/70167.html

Kurz:
Hello World!

“A common greeting” : Engl: Hello World! Deutsch? [_________________]
(zB Hallo Welt)

Sie sind [23] Jahre alt  = You are
Sie sind [aus München] = You live [in]

values/strings.xml: Refresh Level

Problem:  ”print ‘you are here’ “;
In Android so zu lösen:
text = getString(R.string.rescanthis)

Auch nicht superhübsch.
